The UWC Snooker Club is one of the most successful sports clubs in the University, and one of the most successful University snooker clubs in Britain. We are current British Champions, the third time we have acheived the feat following successes in 1994 and 1996. In 1998 we were runners-up at both Junior and Senior level. The club competes in the top division of the Cardiff and District Snooker League which has included several porfessionals over the years. In 1995 World top 5 player Mark J. Williams competed in the club and made a century break. The club is situated in the Games Room in the third floor of the Cardiff University Students Union. We are a very friendly and sociable club who are always keen for new members. Although we aspire to a high standard of snooker for major tournaments we welcome players of any standard to join our club. We will soon be having the club table recovered which will hopefully improve everybodys game! If you are a Cardiff University student who is interested in snooker, these are the benefits of joining the club: Membership is only £10, and the table prices are 50 pence for half and hour. This compares to £1 for half an hour on the other snooker tables in the Union. The procedure for playing is easy - you turn up and youll get a game! There is no need for booking. Every member who is at the club at the time will get his or her turn on the table. Whether youre a century maker or a beginner, there is equal opportunity for you to get some practise in. However, all members MUST carry their membership cards at all times. This year we are in need of players for the BUSA University Championships so we can go one step better than last year! We also need players for the two local league sides. League matches are held on a Tuesday nights. the simple message is practise more and there is a better chance of making the team. However, we need to know you are keen, therefore make yourself known to team members, The teams are not closed shops by any means - we are always eager for new players. Last year we began the UWC Snooker Club Championship. If you fancy becoming Cardiff university Snooker Champion, this is the club for you! At the end of each year a Welsh Universities representitive team is selected for the BUSA Home Nations tournament by the Welsh Technical Representitive, who is usually a member of the club. The bulk of the team is also usually selected from our club which is an extra incentive to join. We are more than just a snooker club though! We have many club nights out and due to the close proximity of the Tafarn bar, a few frames of snooker are usually followed by a few pints! There is also a club trip to the Regal Welsh Open, which this year takes place at the Cardiff International Arena in January and has special rates for students.
