Billiards World in Billiard Wholesale Directory

Billiards derived from an outdoor game of the croquet family played in 14th century in Northern Europe. The word Billiard has an interesting etymology, it is likely to be a French derivative coming either from billart (mace) or bille (ball). During the early ages and in the ancient Egypt, many kinds of ball sports were played. Those sports used clubs, skittles and maces. This picture below was a famous textbook picture. People often related billiards with this picture but from my point of view had nothing doing with billiards. But the records do showed that it had connection with ground billiards. Ground Billiards,is a game that was played on a small outdoor court with a hoop at one end and an upright stick at the other. This Croquet-esque pastime required people to strike balls around the court with maces. Clive Everton, the writer of History of Billiard, said, Ground Billiards crystalized into existence in the 1340s and carried on into the 1600s. It was apparently played throughout much of Europe - in Italy it was known as biglia, in France bilhard, in Spain virlota and some texts say that in England it was known as ball-yard and theres reliable documents state this was true. However, whether the billiard comes from Ground Billiard is depend on your criteria of defining sport similarities. In 1400, some people began to play a version of ground billiard inside the house, it probably explains why the cover of billiard tables always has been green, it corresponds with grass color. The earliest evidence found for the existence of Billiards played on a table was in 1470 in an inventory of items purchased by King Louis XI of France. Listed were billiard balls and billiard table for pleasure and amusement.. Earliest mentions in England were in 1588 when Billiard tables were in the possession of The Duke of Norfolk and the Earl of Leicester as well as Mary, Queen of Scots, who had a billiard table in her prison cell while she awaited execution. As the game developed, billiards usually acted as a social entertainment, you could see it at the clubs, bars or some casual social places. In 21th century, information exploded all over the world and billiard became an entertainment for every one. We search the documents we need from the internet, and if you turn on the TV, you can see a lot of top billiard player perform in front of you. Billiard grew rapidly this century and now Olympics are considering to place billiards into one of the contests. Which means this activity will be define as real sport in this century.
